There are many benefits to keeping your sidewalk, driveway, and house sparkling clean. But you don't have to wear yourself out with a scrub brush and a bucket of hot, soapy water. An electric pressure washer will do all the work for you by letting you clean everything in just a few days instead of a few months.

Pressure washers essentially take water and, by using a bit of physics, send out a fine spray at a super-high speed. This lets you clean things quickly, and best of all, without using harsh chemicals in most cases.

Finding the best electric pressure washer can be tricky; after all, there are a lot of choices out there. How can you be sure which one is best for your driveway and which one is best for your siding? What size reservoir should you get, and how do you even use it?

That?s what this guide is for. Immediately following this intro, you?ll find a list of 12 reviews with electric pressure washer ratings, with brief coverage of what each one brings to the table. Immediately after that, you?ll find an expert electric pressure washer buying guide which will let you know how they work, and more.

This model comes from the popular Karcher brand along other units such as Karcher K4 electric power pressure, known for creating some of the best electric and gas pressure washers in the industry. Still, the most attractive thing about the K1700 is the price since it remains the lowest on the list. Power with this model is about average, with 1700 PsI and 1.2 GPM making it suitable for light tasks.

Some medium tasks can be handled, but only with extra accessories and solution. It’s smaller than other choices, so needs a lot less support when moving. Three spray tips are included, but it is recommended to expand on that by buying the extra tips. A 0.5 gallon detergent tank should provide enough room for you to put dirt clearing solution to help with stubborn spots.

It’s removable, so if there are ever cracks, the bin can be replaced without using the warranty. The K1700 is solidly built, using all metal hose connections and a solid frame. This may very well be the best light duty pressure washer on the market, which is no surprise since Karcher is a top three company.

The Karcher’s K4 electric power pressure washer is a great example of an electric pressure washer that still has good power. The high priced K4 is part of the popular K series. Specifically, the K4 manages to find the sweet spot between usability and raw power. Specifications for this model puts it at 1900 Psi and 1.5 GPM, a respectable number when going head to head with a gas pressure washer. The wand has twist action to control the pressure, making it easier to switch on the fly when going from one area to the next. Users can keep the main unit anywhere while using the lengthy 25 foot hose to handle light to medium cleaning tasks. But the crowning achievement of the K4 is its consistency, managed by the N-COR pump. Everything just runs smoothly with this system in place without being too noisy (even at the highest power setting). The onboard detergent tank has a lot of room for cleaning solutions, with the added benefit of being removable. Since the K series has been out for a while, there are plenty of compatible accessories to extend the units functionality. When you want to sample the best in electric pressure washers, anything from the K series will fit the bill.

Electric Pressure Washer Buying Guide

Pressure Washing

What Is A Pressure Washer And How Does It Work?

From reading the reviews and the pressure washer ratings above, you probably have a fairly good idea of what a pressure washer does and how it can help you. If you still aren?t sure, don?t worry. This guide is meant to help you out with that.? And if you still aren?t sure what the world of pressure washers is about and what the right options are for you after reading this guide, leave a comment below and ask your question.

A pressure washer is essentially a machine that takes in water and pumps it out at high speeds and at high pressures. Depending on the machine, you can get pressure outputs of anywhere from 1500 to 3000 pounds per square inch (psi) for home machines and nearly 5000 psi for industrial machines. But quite honestly, for cleaning things around the house, you don?t want too much pressure. 5000 psi would peel the paint off your house, damage the bricks, and might even crack the sidewalk. So, when looking at the best pressure washer for the money, it?s not all about total pressure.

Most professionals look at pressure washers in terms of cleaning units (CU). This is a rating that combines the amount of pressure your washer puts out with the amount of water used, in terms of gallons per minute (GPM). So a pressure washer with 2000 psi and 2.3 GPM has 4600 cleaning units. That?s the same as a pressure washer that puts out 2300 psi and 2.0 GPM. So you can see that when looking at pressure washers, you shouldn?t just look at the pressure to get an idea about how well it will clean.

Pressure washers work pretty simply. There?s an intake hose that draws in water from a source. In most cases, this is going to be a garden hose attached to your outside tap. From there, a small pump will pump the liquid through a hose so it leaves the pump at a much higher velocity than it came in. The water is then jammed through a narrow metal tube in the handle and then forced through an even smaller nozzle at the tip of the handle. This causes the pressure to skyrocket when the water is released through the small opening.

That pressure lets the water go shooting out to clean everything in its path. Okay, there are some things that pressure washers will not clean well. Oil stains that have embedded and soaked into concrete might not come out from a pressure washing. However, algae, moss, dirt, and accumulated grime will all come off with the proper use of the pressure washer. You just have to use the right nozzle for the job. Before we discuss nozzles and what you should use them for, however, let?s look at how a pressure washer is made.

Different Parts of Pressure Washers

Every pressure washer is different, depending on the manufacturer, but yet, they are also all the same in principle. Here?s a short list of the parts of a pressure washer and what each of them does.

Water Intake: This is where the water enters the pressure washer from the water supply. You?ll usually find a coarse mesh filter here to prevent chunks of leaves or any other grit from entering the washer. That is because you don?t want a bit of sand or something to come shooting out of the pressure washer at 3000 psi. That could cause some issues, for sure.

The Motor: This is the power source for spinning the pump. The pressure washer reviews we?ve covered herewere all electric. However, you can find industrial units that are powered by gas or diesel engines.

The Pump: The type of pump that is found in pressure washers vary, but all of them will be of the reciprocating piston or plunger type. It?s important to know the type of pump that your pressure washer has so you know the pros and cons of each as well, and so you can estimate how long they typically last. We?ll cover that next.

Water Outlet: This is the hose that exits the pressure washer. It is specially designed to handle the increased pressure of the water as it is pumped in. Most high-pressure hoses are reinforced with a wire mesh and also high-density plastic. It's important to use the hose that came with the pressure washer, as substituting another could cause a dangerous rupture which could lead to damage and/or injury to others.

Cleaning Nozzles and Attachments: Most pressure washers come with a variety of attachments meant to make cleaning easier. Some are set at an angle to allow you to reach hidden areas easily. Others are wider and meant to reduce the amount of pressure coming out so you can wash more delicate things, like windows or your car. You can also find rotary brushes and even high-pressure tips that are meant for scouring cement. You?ll see some that say something like ?0-degree? or ?40-degree? when describing the nozzle. This is a measure of how wide the outgoing spray will be. A 0-degree nozzle is just a straight shot of water going at 2000 psi, while a 40-degree nozzle will spread that water out over 40 degrees, making it more gentle (but still very dangerous).

What do you use the nozzles for? Each nozzle is made for cleaning different things. Here?s a short list of what they can be used for.

Type of Nozzle What to Clean

0 Degree; The strongest most direct stream is suitable for cleaning extremely caked-on dirt and mud from equipment. Use to remove heavy dirt or stains from a small area. Be careful using on plastics and woods as the pressure can damage them from close ranges.

15 Degree Fan; Use this nozzle for hard surfaces that can take the impact. You can strip paint, remove surface stains (mildew, oil, and grease) and clean stubborn stains on the blacktop.

25 Degree Fan; This is made to clean siding and other softer materials. You can also use this to clean brick, wood decks, blacktop, and concrete. Again, make sure you're not too close or you can damage the material

40 Degree Wide-Spray; Use this nozzle for rinsing off your car after washing it, wash lawn and patio furniture, and lawn equipment.

Low Pressure (sometimes called a soap nozzle); This is used to gently rinse things and to apply soap to siding, your car, windows or anyplace else you need the extra cleaning power before using another nozzle.

Types of Electric Pressure Washer Pumps

Pressure washer pumps come in three varieties, and knowing which one comes in your electric pressure washer will ensure you have the best pressure washer for your needs.

Wobble Plate Pumps: This type of pump is connected to the driveshaft and uses a wobble plate to drive pistons back and forth. The wobble plate is a solid round plate that is set at an angle to the axis of the rotary shaft. As the shaft spins, the plate's height at one point wobbles up and down.

This type of pump isn't very efficient because of its design. It has to work both against the liquid being pumped and the springs that push each piston. These pumps are usually found in cheaper entry-level pressure washers that aren't meant to be repaired. The pumps are usually made and welded shut at the manufacturer?s, making opening them to repair more expensive than just replacing them.

The positive side of a wobble plate pump is that it is self-priming and can produce water pressure as high as 2500 PSI in most cases. On the other hand, they have a lower flow rate than other pumps, producing less than 2.0 gallons per minute.

Swash Plate Pump: This type of pump is very similar to the wobble plate pump, but has some key design improvements. In the swash plate pump, the plate is still set at an angle to the shaft, but it is fixed in place. The pistons are arranged like the holes in a six-shooter and spin with the shaft. As they spin, they move back and forth, drawing in water and pushing it out.

This design means that the pump can have larger bearings, which means the pump will run for longer before needing to be replaced or repaired. On the positive side, this pump is much smaller than a wobble plate pump, but able to produce higher pressures (usually up to 3500 psi). You can also adjust the output volume by adjusting the angle of the swashplate. On the negative side, it's harder to cool this type of pump because it runs at extremely high speeds.

Triplex Plunger Pump: This type of pump is usually only found in industrial and extremely high-grade professional pressure washers. It is set up similarly to a car engine, with three pistons driven by a single crankshaft spun by the engine. These pumps run at a much lower temperature than the other two types of pumps because the pistons run at slower speeds.

The positive side of having this style of pump is that because of how they are made, they are easy to repair. They are extremely efficient and can produce pressures well over 3000 psi. But as with everything, efficiency and performance come at a cost. These types of pressure washers are much more expensive than the other two.

Asking the Right Questions

When you?re looking for the best electric pressure washer for your needs, you should ask yourself a few simple questions to narrow down your choices. Here are a few questions that you should be asking to help find the best-rated pressure washer for your home.

What can you use pressure washers on? You can use a pressure washer on just about anything. But what can you use it on safely, without risking damage to whatever you?re cleaning? Well, the answer?s still the same. You can use a pressure washer to clean an ancient Ming vase if you?re far enough away from it. That?s because the distance you are from the surface being cleaned greatly affects how much pressure is hitting it. Here?s the secret. When you use your pressure washer, start at about four feet away and move in closer until you start to see your target surface or object becoming clean. But make sure you?re using the right nozzle for the job. Don?t use a 0-degree nozzle on your wood deck unless you like splinters.

Some of the best uses of pressure washers are cleaningthings you?d never think to use them on. For example, you can pressure clean your grill. As long as you take care and rinse it thoroughly, you can degrease and clean your racks faster than you can blink. Just make sure that if you have a propane grill, you disconnect the tank and put it somewhere safe.

One great use for a pressure washer is on old patio furniture. You know which pieces of furniture I mean. The white plastic ones that aren?t so white anymore and have a curious green-brown stain on them, and you think about tossing them because they look so bad. Take five minutes going over them with a pressure washer and a 25-degree nozzle, and they will look as good as the day you brought them home.

Trust us when we say that pressure washing can get addictive. You?ll see how clean something gets and the next thing you know, you?ll wonder if maybe you couldn?t clean that shed (you can), or get the fence looking better (you will), or even see if the brick patio is still red under all that grime (it is).

Can you use hot water in apressure washer? No. Pressure washers are designed to be used with cold water. That?s because hot water will stress and damage the seals and the pump. But believe us, with the amount of pressure that comes out of even a light pressure washer, you can clean nearly anything without hot water.

Can you use any detergent or soap? You don't want to just dump Dawn dishwashing liquid in the detergent container. That's because with the amount of pressure and water, you aren't going to get the concentrations of soap you need. Stick with detergents that are made for pressure washers, and use the right kind for whatever you're going to clean. That is, you don?t want to use degreasing soap when you?re washing your car, and you don?t want to use concrete soap on your fence or deck.

Also, be aware of the difference between soap and detergent, because you?ll see both kinds when you shop around. In general, detergents have chemical additives that serve a specific purpose. Some of these chemicals include fungicides formulated to kill molds. Others are designed to remove grease. These detergents are usually less environmentally friendly than soaps, but some detergents are made to be environmentally friendly and are made from biodegradable components. Make sure you read the labels on whatever detergents you are thinking about to see if the ingredients can harm your plants, pets, or local wildlife.

Safety Rules for Power Washers

Power washers may seem fun; after all, they spray water and clean stuff quickly with a blast of water. But just like a 1200-cc motorcycle is fun, it?s also dangerous and will seriously injure you if you don?t follow some safety precautions. To give you an idea of why pressure washers are so dangerous, here?s one small fact before we go through the six safety rules you must follow: It only takes a little over 1000 psi for a pressure washer to cut through the skin. At a full 2500 psi, you can amputate a finger.

Now that we?ve impressed the seriousness of the dangers of pressure washers onto you, here are six safety rules you should follow.

1. Make sure the area is safe. When we say you should make sure the area you?re cleaning is safe, we mean you should look at everything in the area. Are there any bicycles or toys nearby? Can any pets access the area? Are there any trees or bushes that could cause an issue? Do you know what to do if the pressure washer starts to malfunction? These are all important things to think about before you even get your pressure washer out.

2. Wear the correct personal protective equipment. Never ever do pressure washing in sandals or flip flops. If you want to see why, just do a Google search for "barefoot pressure washing injuries." If that doesn't convince you, nothing will. Also, when you do pressure washing, wear gloves. A lot of people are injured when a 0-degree nozzle nicks their bare hand because they aren't careful. Likewise, wear enclosed shoes. You should ideally wear steel-toed boots or steel-toed rubber boots, but at the very least, non-open toed boots. Also, wear pants and long sleeves to protect yourself from any chips or debris that fly back. And above all, wear eye protection. Proper eye protection will prevent you from having the most realistic pirate costume on Halloween.

3. Know your equipment. This means you need to read the manual that came with your pressure washer. You need to be sure you know what to do if the machine starts malfunctioning. The manual will also let you know what symptoms mean your machine is malfunctioning. Most manuals are only a few pages long. It?s a small effort to read it while you?re having breakfast, but it can save you a lot of hurt in the long run.

4. Keep your head on aswivel. Basically, don?t get so focused on what you?re cleaning that you?re not paying attention to anything else. Be aware of what?s going on around you. You should be keeping track of pets, children, and loved ones in your peripheral vision so that you don?t accidentally cause a devastating injury. Also be on the lookout for any cables or power lines in your vicinity.

5. Go wide. When you start to clean, don?t immediately jump to the 0-degree nozzle. Use the widest one that came with the washer and work your way down. There?s no need to use a 50-pound sledgehammer when a rubber mallet will work. By far, most of your work will be done with the 25 to 30-degree nozzle.? Also, test the surface you?re cleaning in a spot that won?t be noticeable. The last thing you want to do is start cleaning the middle of your concrete step and have it crack under the spray.

6. No Ladders. Don't get on a ladder with a pressure washer. It just makes the wand even more difficult to control and makes you subject to Newton's Third Law. You know, the one that says, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." In layman's terms, you shoot 2000 psi against your siding, 2000 psi is pushing back at you and you're going to go down. If you have to clean up high, get an extension wand.

Pressure washers are a great way to clean nearly any outdoor surface around your home, from your wooden patio deck to the asphalt blacktop, provided you take the right precautions. After all, you can damage nearly anything if you?re putting a lot of pressure on it from up close. Use the approximate distance chart that we showed you and you should never have an issue with anything you?re cleaning. Once you?ve cleaned something, you shouldn?t need to clean it again for at least a season, maybe even a year or two.

There are situations where you shouldn't use pressure washers, of course. Laminates or other low-impact plastics are best cleaned with a stiff brush and some water mixed with bleach. Some sidings should be cleaned gently, and older stonework and concrete should definitely be handled with care. But if you're looking for a safe and non-chemical way to clean up your property, a pressure washer may be just what you need.
